Alicia Machado was born Yoseph Alicia Machado in Maracay Venezuela on 6 December 1976. Alicia has a mixed background. The father of her was Spanish and her mother was Cuban. She has been a major player in television, film and beauty contests all her life. Alicia Machado rose to fame after she was crowned Miss Venezuela at age 19 representing Yaracuy. Her crowning achievement came one following year when she won the Miss Universe 1996 title, the fourth Venezuelan who has won the coveted title. Her reign during her time as Miss Universe, however, was a source of controversy as well as criticism from the media because of the weight gain she experienced throughout her time as Miss Universe.
